Bali Batur 2015 – Cross Country Mountain Bike solo 44km ride

Saat menuliskan post ini, sudah lewat empat bulan lebih trip awal tahun 2015 ini. Masih sangat kesulitan mengumpulkan kata kata dan juga semangat. Saking terasa berkesannya ride ini jadi terlalu banyak ekspektasi. Inilah salah satu kesulitan menulis blog, saat kita menulis serasa tidak pernah bisa menggambarkan apa kejadian yang kita alami. Tulisan serasa tidak mewakili pengalaman.

Tapi sudahlah, ayo kita mulai saja cerita genjot sepeda sendirian ini.

Memang sudah direncanakan jauh hari untuk berlibur tahun baru, dan kali ini cukup istimewa karena bawa sepeda dan sudah dijadwalkan dari awal untuk menghabiskan satu hari untuk bersepeda. Menginap di Lakeview Hotel, pagi itu menghabiskan lebih dari satu jam untuk merakit sepeda. Ini baru pertama kali dialami selama ini dibutuhkan hanya untuk merakit, semua gara gara posisi anting RD yang dilepas dan rantai yang kacau ditambah tidak adanya chain-tools. Halah! Akhirnya dengan lega bisa melihat sepeda berdiri, waktu sudah menunjuk lebih sejam dari target semula start gowes. Seolah gowes hari ini dimulai dengan kekacauan… gimana ya gowes hari ini akan berjalan?

Setelah mengganti batere GPS, kebiasaan yang saya selalu lakukan kalau terutama untuk antisipasi gowes yang panjang dan akan banyak bergantung GPS. Dari area start Kintamani, sebuah wilayah di bibir kaldera pertama (kaldera lapisan luar) dari Gunung Batur. Trek perjalanan hari ini diperoleh dari tracklog Kang Indra Anggara, saat Bali XCM 2013. Memang mencoba trial di actual track Bali XCM ini salah satu alasan kuat perjalanan total tiga hari ke Pulau Bali kali ini. Asli penasaran banget seperti apa track nya. Hari ini akan gowes sendirian, dan waktu cek ke Kang Indra, infonya track ini masih berada relatif di tengah area yang dihuni. Jadi aman lah gowes sendirian…

Track dimulai dengan turunan aspal sampai ke tepi danau Batur. Kirim foto sebuah rumah makan yang tepat berada di mulut pintu masuk ke track. Foto dikirim agar tim support bisa nunggu disini nanti sore saat finish.

Tak lama setelah keluar dari jalan aspal pinggiran danau Batur, disambut trek lebar, dengan beberapa kali papasan dengan truk pengangkut pasir, maka kita segera disambut dengan area ‘black lava’. Rupanya penduduk di area start tadi tidaklah berelebihan saat bercerita, “… lewat black lava saja (sambil jari menunjuk ke gerbang), tempatnya indah sekali”.

DCIM101GOPROSudah sering saya gowes melewati banyak tipe kawah dan lansekap gunung, namun jelas area black lava-nya Batur ini sangatlah indah dan eksotis. Sangat minim (atau bahkan tanpa) vegetasi, semua serba hitam warna batu, dan bentukan fisik batu yang sangat unik. Menjadikan area ini seperti sebuah taman geologi, taman batu, rock garden.

Tiga tahun bersama Specialized Carve Comp 29er 2012

Barusan lihat posting lama di blog ini, saat pertama kali beli sepeda yang dinamai KI LOBANG, Specialized Carve Comp 29er 2012 link.. Baru sadar kalau ternyata udah tiga tahun pakai hardtail kembali dan pakai 29er. Kalau ditanya bagaimana rasanya pakai sepeda 29, klik link diatas, yang saya tulis setelah memakai selama empat bulan. Juga sampai sekarang sepeda 29 itu masih saya pakai. Nah, posting blog ini sekalian mau nyeritakan beberapa perubahan dan efeknya.

Ban luar.

Bawaan full bike nya tentu memakai ban specialized, tapi karena saya sering menjalani trip XC dengan lebih banyak porsi uphill, maka saya rasakan ban luar bawaan full bike nya, Specialized Ground Control, terasa besar dan berat padahal ukurannya sudah cukup kecil 2.1×29. Akhirnya setelah sekitar setengah tahun menggunakan ban standard nya, lalu dua tahun setengah ganti ke Continental X King 2.1×29.

Profil kembang dan ukuran ban nya lebih langsing tanpa kehilangan daya cengkeram yang berarti. Malah saya merasakan untuk trek kering Continental ini enak banget dipakai speeding, stabil dan tidak licin dan gampang meleset. Membuat kita jadi makin percaya diri, terutama di turunan panjang.

Setelah dipakai dua tahun akhirnya Continental sobek samping juga, diputuskan untuk ganti ban yang cenderung ringan, maka dipilihlah MAXXIS Icon 2.2×29. Dipilih ban ini karena perpaduan antara ringan meski bukan pilihan ter ringan dan harga yang terjangkau. Meskipun sebelumnya sempat dapat info kalau Icon ini traksi nya tidak baik, namun ternyata setelah dicoba selama tiga bulan terakhir sudah cukup banget untuk style riding saya. Untuk sementara masih menyimpan keinginan untuk berpindah ke rim tubeless dan berganti ban tubeless.

Fork

Major change berikutnya pada KI LOBANG adalah fork. Dengan harapan membuat sepeda lebih ringan dari beban semula sekitar 14 kg, maka fork salah satu yang pertama diganti dari standard nya coil ke single air. Kok ya pas banget salah satu online store langganan lagi ada diskon 28% fork 29er. Rejeki gak kemana. Cuma sayangnya warnanya yang putih bikin penampakan sepeda secara total berubah.

Crank and Drivetrain

Ini area yang paling banyak dan sering dikulik dan diutik. Setelah sempat upgrade manis dari 9 speed Alivio ke 10 speed X9 di tahun pertama, maka sudah enam bulan ini teracuni untuk move on ke Single Chainring 1×10 modifikasi. FD shifter sebelah kiri dihilangkan lalu mulai utak utik setting dengan berbagai variasi chainring. Belakang ditambah 42T lalu depan diubah ke 30T, tapi kemudian naik ke 32T tapi akhirnya sekarang steady di 28Tx42T.

Secara umum berat berhasil diturunkan dari 14 kg ke 11.7 kg. Dan dengan mencoba single chainring kayaknya seterusnya tidak lagi pengen pasang shifter kiri dan FD.


WJxc RIde#33 Jalur Pipa Gas – Tangerang

Ini adalah kunjungan keempat saya ke trek ini. Ya, hanya empat kali dalam delapan tahun; cukup jarang untuk cerita dan kisah serta legenda yang tertanam di trek ini. Setelah berkenalan dengan trek ini sekali, menjalaninya setelah hujan sekali, ikutan di salah satu event nya sekali, maka genjot sepeda gunung kali ini adalah yang keempat kali untuk reuni bersama teman teman lama yang sudah tersebar di penjuru belahan dunia. Ya, ini sekitar liburan lebaran sehingga semua bisa bertemu dan memilih sebuah kegiatan unik buat bertemu.

DCIM100GOPROMeski semalam trek terkena hujan, tapi tidaklah terlalu basah, masih bisa gowes dengan full of fun. Apalagi salah seorang dari peserta gowes adalah rekan yang samasekali baru mencoba ber sepeda gunung, sepeda pun kita carikan pinjaman. Meskipun sempat kuatir dengan acara ‘reuni dengan gowes’, tapi ternyata seru dan fun, karena ada juga warung Mpok tempat rekan kami yang tidak ikut gowes dan memilih menunggu sambil makan minum sederhana.

DCIM100GOPROTrek dan ride nya sendiri sangat santai, hampir satu jam untuk satu lap saja. Santai habis selain juga trek licin jadi banyak yang harus tuntun sepeda.

Kamera GoPro saya mount di salah seorang rekan yang paling newbie dan baru coba sepedahan, untung belio nya rajin lari dan nge-gym jadi secara kondisi fisik ok. Di edit iseng juga buat dokumentasi reuni di video berikut ini…

Saya rekomendasikan ride pagi di JPG bisa jadi salah satu pilihan acara reuni alternatif… fun, murah, dan spesial serta berkeringat.


WJxc Ride#32 – North Bandung, East Java – Palintang Uphill & Palasari 2

What happened in last Ramadhan Night Ride, a reunion with Om Indra Anggara, continues… This trip was again in contact with him. Among East Bandung mountain bike riders, Mt. Palasari been one of the main attaction, their main menu. There are currently 10 Palasari tracks available as a result of extensive mountain bike exploration from two Eastern Bandung communities: TERJAL (Cicaheum) and NGAPRAX (Cileunyi). Both communities hand in hand, not only exploring new tracks possibilities but also maintain existed ones. My highest appreciation for both communities, for doing these voluntary, amazing on these days.

Despite been doing mountain biking for 7 years now, and spend a lot of mountain biking time in Bandung area, I have only taken Palasari 3 long time back. This is really a humiliation for myself, truly a waste of time not being able to manage enough Palasari exploration trip. OK, let’s move on and plan for more Palasari trips.

Today we choose the classic way to start the track, by doing uphill ride to Palintang. There is another option by loading our bikes in load car or ‘angkot’, especially since the road condition up to the top of Palintang Hill now already in a smooth asphalt road. It was different in five years back… check this trip report…

DCIM100GOPROStart the trip with connection via Goweser Bandung Timur (GBT) page in Facebook that morning we start the ride with Om Indra and Om Heri. Om Heri is special friend also coming from Cikarang. After scrambling around Alun Alun Ujung Berung, hardly trying to pass the traditional market which overflow to the road, a bit traffic in a very small city, smiles coming when the road gradient start to be more challenging.

One of the place very popular in this uphill lines to Palintang is ‘Kampung Tanjakan Panjang’ (Long uphill village). The name reflecting what does it means; long and steep uphill in the middle of a village. I’ve been ride this uphill lines many many times, from the time when most part of the track still in very bad condition, until now the track relatively in a good condition even for car and motorcycles.

Something really never changed. North Bandung will never fail to impress you if you love to ride uphill… This tracks will broke your chest down…

North Bandung uphill will also giving you more to your eyes, the sightseeing changes from a crowded residential area, then start kampung area with more open spaces; in Bahasa Indonesia we called it ‘kebun’. Then we will see some parts of paddy fields, followed with pine woods at the final part of the uphill. The changes of sightseeing also followed by increase in gradient of the track. The gradient by the way still manageable and still ride-able. The path goes to a pass between Mt. Palasari and Mt. Palintang.

DCIM100GOPROOne village we passing by on the uphill ride is ‘Desa Palintang’. The village now been much more developed especially when better condition of roads now give full access to the village. The village become more and more important in the alternate line from Ujungberung to Maribaya.

More accessible does not always means good things, as mountain biker off-course very much missed a hard and technical macadam track just in the middle of the Kampung Palintang. Now all the way to Bukit Tunggul already smooth road even road bike can reach.

A sign of forbidden area for motor trails also appear before we enter the village. More and more access does not always means good things, including privacy and noise coming from the improved road.

But still, an uphill to Palintang Pass always and still an interesting uphill with stunning natural beauty views. On our right side we have Mt Palintang, which also can be connected to part of Genteng Track to Tanjungsari, while on the left side of the road we have a view of Mt. Palasari with a lot of part are pine woodland still in a good condition

DCIM100GOPROWith more and more conservation woodland being converted for vegetables plantations; legally and illegally, it’s really a beautiful fact that these pine woodlands survive so far. Doing mountain biking give me more and more sightseeing of conservation destructions, and less good practice and good news like this.

Ok, let’s stop worrying and just start to enjoy the ride…

Riding inside the Pinewood started with a frightening slope for a hardtail cross country rider like me. We start very slow with a lot of scream from the brake. The frightening part was only the first 100m, after that the singletrack was flowing. A dream for every mountain biker. Please see YouTube link below to see the flowing lines.

It was just BEAUTIFUL !!!

If you love single-track like me, you got to be kidding if you don’t want to ride on this track. The track not only cool and green, but also relatively all the way long ride-able. This is not an ordinary occasion while we also met a moto-cross rider going up-hill on the single-track.

I have a big empathy for our fellow moto-cross riders, but I have to admit that my heart broken when I heard the throttle and their machine running high rpm and digging the lines of our beautiful single-track.

DCIM100GOPROFellow moto-cross riders, I understand that everybody have the same right to ride in this beautiful lines. Us, mountain biker, and you, moto-cross riders have the same right. But, please, can you just not ‘tear’ our tracks down, please…

It was strange that the flowing singletrack lines are just in the right volume. Sometimes, we found it too fast to be finished. But this line was a loooooonnggg line. Finally we found a rocky double-track. The challenge is not to stop. This double-track going traverse on the side of Palasari and all the way to finally found an open land with beautiful scenery.

STUNNING!!!

This is one of the reason riding north Bandung. When you got a clear sky, you will see a breath-taking view you’ll never forget. All the pain during a long uphill was just disappear… From this point actually we can see the Dago/Tahura part in the west, the right hand side; and all the way down to see the Bandung highland city view in front of us; to the Palintang part in the east side. And when the weather is right just like when we have the ride, it was just perfect!

DCIM100GOPROMore pictures in my facebook account…Targeting 2pm to be in the city, we were just straight down the lines and finding a short singletrack following by entry to resindential villages. Yes, the beautiful open land 180degree Bandung was actually a converted woods into plantations.

It was not long ride through kampong and then asphalt downhill to Sukamiskin area while we end up this beautiful trip.

Sejak setahun belakangan posting di blog ini agak ‘jaim’. Ya, saya cenderung menyusun posting blog agak proper, dua bahasa sih, kalau lagi punya energi ya nulis dalam bahasa Inggris, tapi kalau lagi gak ya nulis bahasa Indonesia saja. Ini sebabnya blog ini jadi lebih jarang posting nya, bahkan tulisan ini ditulis karena salah satu pemicunya saya lihat ternyata posting sebelumnya adalah empat bulan lalu…

Gara gara dari semua ini, Seri posting dan ride WJxc (West Java XC) rides itu diilhami oleh artikel dalam majalah Mountain Biking UK, cerita tentang seorang rider yang menempuh sekitar 40 track dengan cara hampir setiap hari satu track. Niru nya sih tidak sejauh itu, cuma pengen mendokumentasikan tiap ride di Jawa Barat, juga ada keinginan untuk mendokumentasikan trek mountain bike dalam bahasa internasional, agar lebih luas bisa menyentuh audiens nya.

Blog ini dimulai dari hampir 8 tahun lalu salah satu alasannya karena kesulitan saya menemukan referensi track mountain bike saat akan mencobanya. Dan kemudian blog ini pun dicitakan untuk lebih luas lagi menyentuh dokumentasi perjalanan bersepeda gunung.

Tapi sudahlah, ada masanya blog ini saya tulis dan post hampir tiap hari, ini salah satu post yang rindu pada mood spontan itu, apalagi dengan milestone 1400 comments.

WJxc Ride#31 – GRATISAN#3 – Sanggabuana, East Java – Ngurilingan Sanggabuana

This is a very very long awaited and one of the most wanted trip in my mountain biking list. Not only because part by part trip already done in the past; #1 Cikarang to Curug Cigeuntis, #2 Cikarang to Quiling… but also beautiful track done by friends which I have not got chance to try #3 Quiling Uphill offroad by Ardian_nas. The other part which also making this trip very special was the distance, the long 80+km with many parts are offroad track.

Being planned for long time, and five mountain biker planned to join the trip, actual only three made the ride. Lebaran holiday is very tricky to take a mountain biking trip. How to manage our time availability while most of family members gather was the big challenge for joining this trip. So that morning 3am, three mountain biker load their mountain bikes to the car and heading to the starting point, Pangkalan, Kab Karawang.

That morning just 2km ride getting out of Pangkalan, we exposed by a breath-taking sunrise view. Although expecting to get the sunrise moment since we start ride at 0530am in the morning, I did not expect to get such a view, when the sun just come out from behind pinnacles of Sanggabuana Mountains. An unexpected bonus. Another un-expected bonus was the gravel-macadam double track from Pangkalan to Curug Ciomas, beautiful track inside a teakwoods followed up by a beautiful Curug Ciomas. The track after Ciomas is full of uphill with pinnacles view of Antajaya… all the way up to Quiling Cemetery.

DCIM100GOPROThis track is really full of beautiful scenery, the background of combination macadam, hard soil and broken cement road will never be harder, high density slope. Oh man, when reach a small village Cibeureum we feel like winning a war. The uphill is really really steep, in some area just impossible to keep pedaling. The track also worsened (or made more interesting?) by landslides. The uphill to Kampung Cibeureum been hard and brutal make us spent more than an hour recovering by drink ‘teh manis’.

Ruthless uphill to Cibeureum, it’s only an opener for more steep off-road hike to ‘Desa Talaga’. This hike was a complete deals with off-road singletrack, un-ride-able, no-habitation, land slides sites, and endless… Bikemap.com said that this hike was to the top of Balukbuk Hill, which is ‘only’ 700m above sea level.

Luckily the ending part of this hike was a beautiful pine woods. Pine woods always giving me some kind of new spirit, not only a specific scent come out of the trees, but pine woods always make a beautiful pictures, sometimes dramatic. And after countless pitstops, deep breaths, despair and high tension muscles, we reach Desa Talaga, which uniquely placed just at the top of the hike. Surprising since all the way of long hike we did not find habitation, nearly no human activities, but at the peak of the hike we found a village. DCIM100GOPRO

We take another long break in this village. A little bit celebration for our strong will… I event take a short 15 minutes nap after taking a pray. This is also the end of this trip in the track of Kuiling-Talaga-Sukamaju then we will continue with circling Mount Sanggabuana to Ciririp. Track to Ciririp was a long long macadam downhill. Combination of kampung ride and woods singletracks. Beautiful, technical, long and was really a payback after the hard and ruthless uphill to Kampung Talaga. Look back to the map, just realized while writing this notes that the downhill lines was 7km. No wonder it feels endless.

A long downhill, technical XC tracks, mostly doubletrack inside kampung and singletrack inside the woods ended when slowly the view changed from mountains to a big lake, actually Jatiluhur Dam, biggest dam built in the country. The track then changed from a long and feels like never ending downhills to hard and also never ending rolling by the side of the lake.

This rolling lines from Ciririp to Kertamanah, another nightmare route, was 13km or rolling by the side of the lake. In some places we found a big bridge but without any roads. It seems like the government prepare a round road, including building bridges but the road not actually being materialized. We struggling through a very bad condition lines, sometimes double-track sometimes single-track with useless bridges without roads.

r400IMG_4918This fact only show us how un-planned our government on this project. Spend money for useless infrastructure. A contradiction to actual road infrastructure condition of villages around the lake.

While we see useless bridges, the track condition was terrible. Terrible for normal ride but very adventurous for us. Looks like regularly being used by motorcycles, which will be a very challenging task for them to do. For three of us use bicycle was not an easy journey, since like macadam tracks with no access from cars/four wheel-er, the track become very random and irregular yet in-expectable mood. The track just tear you down, especially when you already physically exhausted and the sunset already looking behind the hills. Out of Ciririp, the track was a rough ruthless line inside a natural bamboo deep forest. It will be not nice situation if we caught in by sunset before passing this part. We are lucky that we reach Kertamanah, when Azan Maghrib heard.

We took another long rest in Kertamanah. Feeling relieved by again found a ‘regular’ road, combination of asphalt and concrete. According to track plan we still 30km to go to finish line. It was really feel like long long way to go. This is also the first time since Quiling, we found a ‘warung’ (small shop) equipped with refrigerator full of cool drinks… It has been more than 9 hours in the wild and finally we found the regular habitation area.

r400IMG_4927Now we coming to the last part of this trip, the last 30km with more acceptable track condition. The track was ok, smooth and off-course still give us hike to hills and down to bridges, like what we usually taken when we circling a mountain. My own physical condition was on a big big challenge. It was drop so bad compared to my two colleagues. Although track condition maybe one of the best of the trip, but this condition also make me feel boring. This in my weak point, I just cannot handle this kind of on-road touring track.

In this part of track many times I choose to just push my bike on uphills. Really exhausted! This is what actually means with what I called GRATISAN ride. The ride push our endurance to the limit. The trip combination of on-road and off-road usually taking 60-100km distance, a mountain bike marathon distance. The GRATISAN ride usually also taking a very long nearly all day ride. Like this ride we load the bike at 3am, start ride at 530am and finish ride at 8pm, unload back our mountain bikes at 10pm. All day, exhaustive, long distance, new track…

A night ride for the closer of the trip. Reaching the starting point at 8pm, found my GPS shown nearly 1500m inclination total the trip!!! This is really the highest inclination off-road trip I ever have in one day!!!

r400IMG_4928I have rated this trip very high. Definitely this is one of my biggest achievement in mountain biking trip since two days trip Bandung to Garut via Papandayan back 4-5 years ago.
